The Earth Science course provides a comprehensive exploration of the dynamic structure and processes that shape our planet. Students will delve into the layers of the Earth, gaining an understanding of the composition and characteristics of the crust, mantle, and core. The course explores the phenomenon of convection currents and their role in driving geological activity, including plate tectonics.

Students will examine the concept of continental drift, exploring the theory of Pangea and the subsequent breakup of landmasses. The course investigates the topography of the ocean floor, focusing on sea floor spreading and the formation of mid-ocean ridges. Students will also gain insight into the theory of plate tectonics, examining the major tectonic plates and their boundaries.

Furthermore, the course delves into the geological processes that shape our planet, including the occurrence of earthquakes and the propagation of seismic waves. Students will explore the types of earthquakes and their impact in Canada, as well as the characteristics and hazards associated with volcanoes. The course also provides an overview of the geological history of specific regions, such as British Columbia, and explores the interpretation of geological events through the use of geological maps.

Additionally, the course addresses Earth's water systems, distinguishing between saltwater and freshwater systems. Students will gain an understanding of watersheds, exploring their importance in managing water resources and mitigating environmental impacts.

By the end of this course, students will have developed a comprehensive understanding of Earth's structure, plate tectonics, geological processes, and water systems. They will gain knowledge about the dynamic nature of our planet, including the formation of landforms, the occurrence of earthquakes and volcanic activity, and the significance of water resources. This knowledge will enable students to appreciate the interconnectedness of Earth's systems and the geological forces that shape our environment.
